Lambretta Registration Time Line

A brief guide to a registration process is as follows using the British Lambretta Archive Club.

Please note, you may also join the Lambretta Club Great Britain.  I join both and use the BLA for my certificates.

Stage One:

1. BLA  – Join and send proof of Lambretta.  Receive back a letter of authentication
2. BLA – If applicable – Obtain a V765 document from the BLA to aid in reclaiming back an old UK number plate previously assigned to the Lambretta.
3. Recognised DVLA Club – If applicable – Reclaim back old number plate via RF60 / VE60 proof.  Go to DVLA recognised club and get RF60 / VE60 photo copy documentation signed.
4. DVLA / .GOV website – Download the forms V55; V355 and V890.

Stage Two A (Imports & Pre BREXT / Pre January 2021):

1. Option One – NOVA Form – complete and send a completed NOVA form to the HMRC.  Consider adding a covering intro letter with your receipt / proof of purchase (Or letter explaining why you do not have it) to the HMRC and wait to receive NOVA letter / number back.  I also send a copy (Not the original) of the BLA dating letter of authenticity with this form.  This can take up to 4 week to receive a NOVA letter with number back.
2. Option Two – Completing the NOVA online (From January 2021, no longer recommended).  To do this, you need a HMRC Personal account login to access HMRC services online.
3. When you receive your NOVA letter / number, you can send in all your  documents and payment to the DVLA to receive V5C Log Book.  This can take up to 4 weeks and often requires a inspection of the Lambretta to be carried out by an independent company the DVLA use for vehicle inspections.

Stage Two B (Imports from January 2021)

Stage Three

1. DVLA – V55 paperwork.
2. NB:  Before a V5C is allocated, your Lambretta may require an inspection, by a third party organisation that the DVLA use.
3. Shortly after you receive your V5C, a V948 number plate authorisation certificate document is issued and your paperwork should also be returned.  This stage does not always happen and is not required if your have a V5C.

Stage Four (If applicable):

1. SORN if required (V890) (Or on-line.  Note: You may need to wait up to 3 months before DVLA publish your number on-line to complete the SORN online)
2. MOT Exempt (V112)

Your Lambretta will come with a years road tax when it is allocated an age related number.  Even if it is not required as it is a historic Lambretta, you must apply for a vehicle tax exemption to stop paying vehicle tax at some stage before the first years tax expires. This is sometimes called putting a vehicle into the ‘historic tax class’.

You do not have to apply to stop getting an MOT for your vehicle each year. However, you must still keep it in a roadworthy condition.

Apply at a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax.  You need to take:

• the log book (V5C) in your name
• your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11), if you have one
• an MOT certificate that’s valid when the tax starts, or evidence if your vehicle’s exempt from an MOT (V112)
• an insurance certificate or cover note (only in Northern Ireland)
